Empower Yourself with Empowering Me! — a thoughtfully designed fill-in-the-blank workbook created to help you communicate your personal preferences, routines, and medical details during a health crisis. Whether it’s your favorite comfort food, how you like your bed made, or essential health information, this book gives your future caregivers the insight they need to support you with dignity and compassion. Because no one knows you like you do.
From the book’s Preface:
Upon receiving my Alzheimer’s diagnosis, my immediate concern was for my son and daughter-in-love. The fear of becoming a burden weighed heavily on me, and I resolved to do everything I could to ease the path of my future care. Knowing the trajectory of this disease, I understood that full-time support was likely, and I wanted to actively participate in guiding those who would eventually care for me, be it family or professional staff.
My doctor highlighted a common challenge: often, dementia is diagnosed after significant progression, making it difficult for patients to communicate their likes, dislikes, and needs. This leaves caregivers to navigate through extensive trial and error. Frustrated by the lack of resources for patients like me – those diagnosed early enough to contribute – I embarked on a search for a guide. I found ample information for caregivers but little to empower patients in providing helpful insights about themselves.
When I shared this frustration with my physician, he affirmed the growing need for resources tailored to individuals with early-stage diagnoses, now more readily identified. This book became my personal quest: to bridge that gap and, equally importantly, to allow me to feel useful to my family during this challenging time.
While I was putting this project together, it was suggested by several people that this information would be good for everyone to fill out, just in case they ever needed a caregiver even if it’s just for a short time, because of an accident or illness. So, some of the questions are a little more general to cover those situations.
It is my sincere hope that this book not only serves as a valuable source of information for my potential future caregivers but also empowers you with the feeling that you are taking positive steps in shaping your own care journey.
